Dallas Cowboys 1st Quarter Recap

As the resident Dallas Cowboys fan of WCWP’s Sports Department, it’s time to post my reaction to the first quarter of the season. Although a fan, I strongly believe that this team could be 4-0 as they go through their bye week.

The Dallas Cowboys opened the 2011 season with an emotional Sunday night matchup against the New York Jets. Even though I’m nervous before every game, I was especially concerned about how the ‘Boys passing game would stack up against a solid Jets secondary. My nerves subsided early on after Dez Bryant made two spectacular catches, including a leaping touchdown grab to put them up 7-0. Fast forward a couple of hours and with a 14 point lead in the 4th I mistakenly felt comfortable. But I should know better. After a Tony Romo goal line fumble, and the blocked punt (correctly predicted by Jordan Lauterbach), Mr. Romo sealed the Cowboy’s gruesome fate, propelling the Jets to a 27-24 victory and sinking the Cowboys to 0-1.

After taking some ribbing from the media for his Sunday night meltdown, Tony Romo took additional ribbing in week 2 at San Francisco. A first half hit suffered at the hands a Niners defender, Romo would not start the second half. His team, down 24-14 and looking at an 0-2 start, needed him in the worst way. Tony answered. My much maligned Q-B reversed his teams fortunes, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat., winning 27-24 (the same score of their week 1 loss). All of this with broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Tony took his ribs and lung back home, bruised but not beaten, and led his team to a come-from-behind victory in week 3, Monday night, against long-time rival, the Washington Redskins. Romo’s legend was growing.

Then the Lions came to visit. The DEE-TROIT LIONS strolled into Jerry’s World 3-0 for the first time since the Model T was introduced. However, they were still the Lions. They had to pull out a miraculous victory in week 3 against the lowly Vikings and, although a feel good story, I didn’t take them seriously. I was justified when the ‘Boys took a 27-3 lead into the the third quarter. And just like Sunday night, week 1, when I feel comfortable, it all fell apart. Back-to-back Romo interceptions were returned for touchdowns and, just like that, a once comfortable feeling became a familiar nightmare. I don’t want to go into the painful details, but the Cowboys fell into the bye week with a 2-2 record looking up at the Redskins. Yes, the Redskins.

I’d like to say that I’m not nervous. The NFC East isn’t as daunting as it has been in years passed. The Giants are average, I don’t trust the ‘Skins as long as Rex Grossman is under center, and the “Dream Team” Eagles are anything but. I should feel comfortable. But, then again, we all know what happens when I think everything is peachy.
