The life of a CW Post play-by-play man is pretty sweet. I swim in a healthy concoction of girls, cars and fancy jewelry on a regular basis. But sometimes it’s good to get away from the upscale grind of Brookville, New York.
That’s why road games are so enjoyable for me. I pack my bags; load up the car with equipment and a couple broadcast colleagues and just go. And with the CW Post Pioneers Football team playing in the PSAC (the ‘P’ stands for Pennsylvania), we really get away from it all.
This week’s road trip took us to Shippensburg, PA, two square miles of pure excitement. The best thing about going into the middle of nowhere is that you’ll usually have to explore to find your own fun. This time was no different.
We stayed in sort-of-nearby Carlisle, founded in 1751 by immigrants who farmed the Cumberland Valley. In our room, we hung out, waiting for Ryan Pettys to finish his phone interview with Jordan Lauterbach on our flagship station, 88.1 FM WCWP.
After a little relaxation, it was time to eat. Not knowing the layout of Central Pennsylvania, I turned to the trusty GPS for dining suggestions. Looking through the list I found the perfect cuisine for a few hungry boys: Barbeque. So I punched it in and away we went.
Around and around we went until we reached our destination. We looked to the right. There was a house. We looked to the left. There was a cornfield. So back to the GPS I went.
Hoss’s was our next destination. It sounded manly enough to satisfy a convoy of truck drivers. On our way, we passed the Sports Emporium, the perfect place for a few sports nuts.
We got to Hoss’s and ate. Buffet style salad & soup bar, ice cream & cookies, the works. Then our entrees came. I ate a Philly Cheesesteak, Ryan had a burger and Matt Soldano chomped on some goose pate with a rice pilaf.
After our meal and about 45 minutes of kicking it with the best waiter in all of PA, Ryan, we jetted to the Sports Emporium. There we were greeted with mini golf, batting cages and arcades. For the record, I won mini golf, despite walking into a spider web and being grossed out. I also tried the mechanical rock wall and played the 1997 classic ‘Top Skater.’ We played a few games of Pop-a-Shot, all won by Pettys, and collected our tickets.
Up at the counter, Matt, Ryan and I each got some stylish sunglasses. We went back to the hotel and took a cheesy Facebook mirror picture like a bunch of goobers.
We slept. We awoke. We hit the road again and went off to Shippensburg University. We proceeded to have our best broadcast to date, right along with the Pioneers getting their best win of the year.
Afterwards, we went back to Long Island to live the high life until next week.
