Jenkins Strains Calf in Morning Practice

From Rich Cimini of the Daily News:

NT Kris Jenkins, addressing the media after this morning's practice, said he suffered a strained calf muscle. He said he hasn't received a prognosis, although he claimed it's not serious and that he expects to return in a few days.

It happened when he was pushing off, preparing to rush the passer. He felt a "pop, pop."

He turns 30 on Monday. Jenkins, still walking with a severe limp, made a self-deprecating old-man joke.

This could be bad. Kris Jenkins is the most important player on the Jets defense -- much like the nose tackle in any 3-4 defense. Remember, he had a legit case for League MVP before he fell off a bit towards the end of the season.

Luckily, he's a gamer, so I expect him to be fine by Week 1.

But much like the Knicks needed a dependible backup for Chris Duhon last year, the Jets a good tackle to spell Jenkins. Duhon became exhausted in the second half of the season because he was playing 35-40 minutes a night at an extraordinary level for most of the year and nobody was there to give him a break.

For Jenkins, the backup is Sione Pouha, and he's not really a difference maker. And I don't know how much Rex Ryan or Mike Pettine will want to play him.

Aside from Wide Receiver, the Jets biggest need is a backup nose tackle for Kris Jenkins. Otherwise, there'll be a repeat of last year.
