The Best News Charlie Weis Has Heard All Day...

Urban Meyer just signed a contract extension to stay at Florida through 2014...

From ESPN:

Urban Meyer, who has taken the Florida Gators to rarified heights with two national championships in four seasons, will see his salary climb to equally exclusive company.

The $4 million club.

A new six-year, $24 million contract for Meyer was finalized Monday, taking his total financial package to $4 million per year and making him the SEC's highest-paid coach in 2009.
It makes him the third-highest-paid coach in the country behind Pete Carroll's repored $4.4 million salary at USC and Charlie Weis' $4.2 million at Notre Dame.
Meyer's new deal will run through the 2014 season, and there are also incentives involved that could raise his pay even higher.
Despite the increase in pay, Meyer's buyout penalty remains $500,000, if he were to leave for any school, including Notre Dame, ESPN's Joe Schad has reported. Florida has taken the stance that they want coaches who want to be at the university.

While the buyout is still in place, I would think its extremely unlikely if Meyer left before the contract still has multiple years on it.

I still think Weis' job is in trouble if the team doesn't at least compete for a BCS bowl bid this year. But the margin of error may have lengthened a bit because Meyer is no longer "waiting in the wings".

Now, if Meyer was ever truly "waiting in the wings" is a subject up for debate. A few months ago, he was quoted as saying that Notre Dame was still his dream job. I'm starting to think that may have been a ploy to get the contact extension ball rolling with Florida. If it was, it was a brilliant move.

It obviously worked
