Tiger Sighting at Bethpage

Wow. This guy is diligent. It appears that U.S Open week has started a bit early. One day after completing a great comeback at the Memorial, Tiger Woods has his sights set on another, bigger prize. The U.S Open.

From ESPN:

Woods made a detour on his way home from winning the Memorial in Ohio, playing 18 holes Monday with swing coach Hank Haney on the course where won the U.S. Open in 2002, the last time it was held at Bethpage Black. This year's Open is June 18-21.

Newsday reported that several dozen golfers who planned to play at Bethpage State Park's four other courses spied the world's No. 1 player and immediately pulled out cell-phone cameras

This is a great idea too, major changes have been made since Tiger was last at the great public course.

The Black Course has been lengthened to 7,426 yards since 2002. It features graduated rough that should allow players to reach the green instead of hacking out to the fairway.

If you remember, Bethpage was played tough in 2002. Tiger won the tourney at -3. Phil Mickleson came in second at even par. Jeff Magget was third at two over par. The changes in the rough seems to signify a change sweeping the PGA tour. No longer is it sheik to have jungles on the side of the fairway. We saw this last week at the Memorial when Jack Nicklaus, of all people, agreed to scale down the difficulty level of the rough. It showed too. Woods' winning score this weekend was a full four strokes better than Kenny Perry's win last year. We'll see if the changes to the rough makes a difference at Bethpage next weekend.
