After entering the day at -1, Tiger Woods made up four strokes yesterday and now sits tied for seventh at -5 at Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio. The leaders, Matt Bettencourt and Mark Wilson, stand at -9. This climb came one day after Tiger's worst day on tour in two years.
Watching players stumble through the course yesterday (boy those are fast greens!), I would not be surprised if both Bettencourt and Wilson fall rapidly in the front nine today. Bettencourt is a thirty four year old rookie who has yet to finish in the top 20. In fact, playing on Saturday is a relative thrill for the rook. He has missed more cuts than he has made in his first go-round on tour. With players like Jim Furyk (-8), Jeff Ogilvy (-8), Davis Love (-7), and Tiger on his tale, I don't expect Bettencourt to last long.
Tiger tees off at 1:15 today. Bettencourt at 1:45. The others in between....talk about pressure. It would show me a lot about this older rookie if he can stay in this thing past the front nine.
Should be a fun Sunday at the Memorial.
