WCWP's own Matt Soldano had this to say in the comment section of my post on the Day 1 U.S Open ticket situation...
... Francesa was ranting about this for a good half hour today. He says he will dedicate his entire show tomorrow about how the USGA are a bunch of crooks. He claims he will come in on Saturday to get down to the bottom of this...Good ol' Francesa...
First off, let me say that Mike Francesa is my own personal hero. He's the guy I grew up listening to. He's the guy who made me want to do what I do. He is the gold standard of sports talk and frankly, no one comes close. But I don't see how the USGA is in the wrong here.
While I think that the gripe is valid, I just don't think there's anything the USGA can do. This is not like baseball where their is a seemingly infinite amount of days for the tickets to be honored. The tournament has Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and that's it. The only scenario I could envision is that if their is a playoff on Monday, the tickets for Thursday be honored then. However, this hinges upon the final regulation round being compleated by Sunday's end. You can't very well tell people who had tickets for the final round that they can't come because it rained on Thursday. This is a major championship final- that doesn't fly.
Ultimately, the only way to rectify this is to play the rest of the first round, and only the first round, on Friday. Obviously, this would mean pushing the tournament back a full day and clearly the USGA doesn't want to do that. Either way, your going to end up stiffing some people out of tickets. The fairest and easiest way to do that is to stiff the round one ticket holders. As I said before, this isn't exactly fair. But not everything has to me.
Plus, people have to understand that rain does happen.
But I understand its a hot button issue...Thoughts? Leave comments or drop me an email.
