The Jets Finally Get with the Program

From the Star-Ledger:

The star of Wednesday's morning practice was the "Wildcat" formation, which was introduced to the NFL last season by the Miami Dolphins and caused quite a stir around the league. The alignment involves a direct snap to the running back, who then has the option to run the ball himself, pass it, or hand it off to another running back.

The Jets spent much of the morning practice working on the formation with Leon Washington and Brad Smith taking snaps, and it was fitting considering the verbal sparring currently going on between Jets coach Rex Ryan and Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder.

With Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez in a heated battle for the starting quarterback spot, Brad Smith appears to have emerged as a solid third option to get major burn under center. I've been calling for this move since the beginning of 2009, and thankfully, my word has reached Rex Ryan.

With the development of the Wildcat, the Jets fans and the NFL will finally get to see Brian Schottenheimer's offensive genius. We saw flashes of Brad Smith in Schotty's first year and randomly dispersed throughout the rest of his tenure. I'm looking forward to seeing a little more Brad Smith this season.

--I saw "The Hangover" today. The much talked about comedy picture out in theaters right now. I've heard that this was the funniest movie in a long time. It's getting great reviews from people in my age demographic. But I have to say, this film was not all it's cracked up to be. Sure there were funny parts, but this is no slam dunk. Currently, movies related to Judd Apatow are money. "The Hangover" is close, but no cigar.

Here's my theory on why this film is being said to be great. This Spring, there have been no comedies to speak of. "Observe & Report" came out in early April. While it had funny, well-timed moments -- Seth Rogen will do that -- it got mixed reviews. Then came the onslaught of "Dance Flick", "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian", and "Land of the Lost". That heavily flooded the theaters with awful comedies. "The Hangover" is definately the best of all of those comedies, and is being overhyped because of its surroundings.

The last movie that got overwhelmingly positive reviews was "Adventureland", and that came out on April 3rd.

Quite simple really.

Nevertheless, "The Hangover" is a mixed bag. A fun-bag, if you will. Some smart, subtle humor. Some low-brow. But a solid comedy all together. Sadly, it probably is the best movie out now. Unless you're planning to go to "Angels & Demons" in your tinfoil hat.
