Bruney Feeling Better

From Kim Jones:

Bruney threw his bullpen today - 15 fastballs, sat for four minutes, 15 more fastballs - and said he felt great, as good as ever. Girardi wanted to see him throw changeups; Bruney said next time. He's probably no more than 10 days away if everything goes well.

Good to hear. The bullpen has struggled and could use a healthy Brian Bruney. Honestly, his stuff in the beginning of the season made everyone forget about Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen. Make us forget, Brian!!

Also, I've wondered aloud several times as to why Phil Hughes has yet to enter a game in relief. He was unceremoniously cast into the pen last week and has been neglected. There was a perfect opportunity to work him in yesterday.

Chamberlain pitched a solid 6 innings and was relieved by Alfredo Aceves. Ace pitched on Saturday and could use a day off. Girardi uses him as a crutch -- and rightfully so. He's the best setup man. Nevertheless, he deserved the day off. Give that spot to Phil Hughes and let him show that he can rise to the occasion & pitch in a tight game, much less pitch out of the pen period. We haven't seen him yet. We don't know what he can do. How long does he (and we) have to wait?

Hughes needs the innings. He's not going to be the "prized pitching prospect" forever. He's 22 years old for goodness sake. He'll be 23 later this month. Let the man pitch.
