From John Ireland of KCAL in LA:
I've learned that the NBA will announce tomorrow (Sunday) that the 2011 NBA All-Star game will be played at Staples Center.
This is a major acquisition for the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), who will have their billion dollar hotel complex--half Ritz-Carlton and half Marriott--open for business long before the game. It will be the second All Star game played at Staples, which last hosted the game in 2004. But this time around, the entire LA Live complex (which had not been built in '04), is expected to host a variety of events surrounding All Star weekend.
There were some worries about what this announcement would be. AHN reported last week that the NBA and NFL were thinking about moving their respective drafts out to the left coast.
As a New Yorker, I pray that the drafts don't move. The reactions garnered by New York fans are priceless. Always a shower of boos for the Knicks draft pick, always false hope for the Jets. It's a wonderful, inexpendible atmosphere. There's just too much history.
For those wondering, the 2010 All-Star Game will be in Dallas.
Here's one of the few times a Knicks selection was immediately welcomed:
And the opposite:
How do you boo Gallo?
