What Could Have Been...

It was no secret that both the Giants and Jets were in need of a wide receiver on draft day. The Giants fulfilled that need in the first round by drafting Hakeem Nicks. The Jets decided not to go that route. Regardless, both teams had deals in place to move up in the draft to make some questionable selections.

From The Newark Star-Ledger:

The Giants said they didn't trade up in the first round of this past weekend's draft because they didn't want to reach for a wide receiver.

It turns out they were closer to reaching -- and to a different player -- than they let on.

Before drafting North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks with their own pick at No. 29, the Giants had worked out the parameters of a trade with the Lions to move up to the 20th pick, according to someone briefed on the negotiations between the two teams.

I'm not a big Maclin-hater, but he's just not what they needed in terms of receiver. Nicks and Barden were the right choices.

If that's not bad enough, check out what the Jets almost did.

From The NY Post:

I'd think twice before buying into the Jets' spin on their receiving corps. You hear and read stuff about the organization being high on David Clowney and Brad Smith, with Rex Ryan gushing about them in his news conferences. Okay, if they love Clowney and Smith so much, why did they make a furious effort to trade up for Florida WR Percy Harvin at No. 21 (owned by the Browns)? Despite his positive marijuana test, and despite medical and character questions, the Jets really wanted him. I think there's a good chance they would've picked him at 17 if they hadn't traded up for Sanchez.

Ouch... I'd rather have no receiver than have Harvin.
