An article by Newsday's Alfonso Castillo -- who has been on Over the Ropes to discuss wrestling -- has caught my eye.
Whether sealing a deal, showing you're a good sport or just saying hello, handshakes are an integral part of American society.
But in some circles, handshakes are becoming something of an endangered species, thanks to swine flu concerns.
Northeastern University in Boston did away with handshakes between deans and students at its commencement Friday. And the leader of Maine's Catholics asked worshipers not to shake hands during services, including the traditional "sign of peace."
On Long Island, at least one organization has barred any pressing of the flesh. The Long Island Junior Soccer League announced it would temporarily suspend handshakes between teams at the end of games.
I truly hate when some random disease takes the nation by storm to the point where it can take control of the littlest things.
Haven't these folks heard of washing hands? Because that's what I normally do after sweating and sliding on a grass/dirt field. Just bring some postgame Purell and get this madness over with.
Eliminating handshakes after a game is ridiculous. Not because of the sportsmanship. But because people -- especially our young people -- shouldn't grow to fear or avoid germs.
--Speaking of local sports, CW Post Pioneers Lacrosse will be on WCWP Sports at 12:50pm EST today. Nick Malone and Ashley Picchone will have the call.
3rd String Radio will be on directly after the game. And Over the Ropes will be on at 10:00pm EST.
