Pitchers on the Mend

From MLB.com:

Reliever Brian Bruney is scheduled to throw for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, and he could rejoin the Yankees' bullpen for Tuesday's series opener against the Orioles.

"I think that's realistic," manager Joe Girardi said, "if he feels good and throws the ball well."

Bruney was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow flexor on April 25, and he came through bullpen sessions on Wednesday and Friday with no reported problems.

This is great news. I'm tired of having to bank on Phil Coke and Jonathon Albaladejo to do keep a lead. With Bruney back, the bridge to Mariano Rivera is strengthened. If the Yankees can get 6+ innings out of their starters -- something CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and AJ Burnett have done several times already -- they will be more successful holding a lead late in the game.

--Also, Chein-Ming Wang will make his second start in AAA today.

And this is from the Star-Ledger:

Oliver Perez threw three scoreless innings Saturday in an extended spring training game in Port St. Lucie, Fla., his first time facing hitters since he went on the disabled list with right knee tendinitis on May 7.

Perez allowed no hits and had seven strikeouts and four walks. He threw 56 pitches. Catcher Brian Schneider, whose return from the DL has been slowed by a nagging calf injury, caught in the game but didn't hit.

Who didn't pitch in the Mets' 7-game winning streak last week? Who caused one of New York's 3 losses this month? Who has been completely unreliable as a starter? The answer to all three questions is Oliver Perez. Maybe the Mets should never bring him back up. It's worked so far.
