MLB to Investigate A-Rod Steroid Claims -- Roberts Will Not Comply

From The New York Times:

Major League Baseball is investigating the accuracy of statements by Alex Rodriguez about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, according to people within baseball who were briefed on the matter.

Investigators have contacted several of Rodriguez's associates to determine whether he used performance-enhancing drugs for a longer time than he has admitted, the people said.

Now that is a complete waste of time. How will MLB 100% prove that A-Rod was juicing with the Yankees unless they waterboard him and demand a confession?

The article also mentions:

On Friday, an investigator asked Roberts if she would cooperate with baseball's inquiry. Roberts said she would not.

Well there's your investigation. It seems pretty shady that Roberts won't back up her own findings to a powerful investigative team.

She's going to be in hot water in the near future.

--A few Jets notes:

Boland has transcripts from Rex Ryan and Brian Schottenheimer from yesterday. Ryan has positive things to say about Jamaal Westerman, the signed rookie DE/LB from Rutgers, who was mentioned on this blog earlier.

A lot of times when you have a defensive lineman – a guy that is used to having his hand in the dirt all the time – the transition to a linebacker spot is difficult. The biggest part of it is the mental part of the game. They start talking about coverages that are totally foreign to a lot of those guys. But with him, he picked it up better than any of the other linebackers, so this guy is pretty sharp. A lot of times, that does not happen. I was impressed with that. We knew he had some physical traits we really liked. He loves to play, he’s a passionate guy. He had a good motor at Rutgers and was coached well. He is a physical player, so I think when the pads go on he is actually going to raise his level (of play).

Also, Yahoo Sports has a great feature on 3rd Round Pick Shonn Greene. After reading this, Matt Soldano put Greene on his 'High Morals' List.

  1. Interesting note: Roberts appeared on the MLB Network tonight to discuss the book and issues surrounding it. Bob Costas asked her why she refused to participate in the investigation. She says that it would be a conflict of interest to participate because she covers the sport. So, it's not that Roberts won't back up her findings as much as she feels it would be unethical to do so- given her ongoing position with SI. In fact, she repeatedly defends her findings and did nothing to beat around them. Be that as it may, I still think the lack of named sources hurt the book. But its interesting stuff. The interview is well worth the watch if MLB Network reairs it.
