Tony Grossi from the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes:I recently spoke with someone I will identify as a league source. This person does not work for an NFL team but works with NFL teams and has a prominent name.
I asked, "Whom do you think will wind up starting at quarterback for the Browns?"
Without hesitation, the answer was, "Brady Quinn."
The person went on to say that the Browns had two "very subtantial" trade offers for Quinn -- each involved a No. 1 draft pick -- and declined to trade him.
Well it looks like Jordan Lauterbach's boo is going to get the nod on opening day.
But back on Draft Day, after the Jets shipped (#5 in your programs, #1 in my heart) Brett Ratliff to the Browns, I said that Ratliff would be ahead of Quinn on the depth chart. After seeing Mangini add to his cult of 'Mangini-Men', my choice seemed logical. Jordan quickly challanged me on my declaration -- with Quinn being his man and all -- and that turned into another candy bet.
But now all hope appears gone. Grossi goes on to write:
The source does not believe that newly acquired ex-Jet Brett Ratliff will be thrown into the open competition. The source's take on Ratliff: "Eric Mangini likes having him around because he feels comfortable with him and he knows the offense."
Oh no...
You may remember the 1st candy bet way back in March, when I bet Jordan that a 16 seed would upset a #1 seed in the NCAA Div. 1 Men's Basketball Tourney. Don't ridicule me. I had the odds. I needed one win. He needed 4.
He lucked out and I lost that one by a few minutes when East Tennessee St. almost beat Pittsburgh. I had to buy him a Twix for his victory.
Anyway, we have until opening day to find out the final verdict on the Browns QB situation. I'll be waiting.
