From the Newark Star-Ledger:The Jets are facing a difficult dilemma regarding RB Leon Washington in light of the uncertainty surrounding the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement.
As the current CBA agreement stands, Washington would be only a restricted free agent in March 2010, not unrestricted, as he would've been under the old agreement. The NFL Players Association and owners are in talks for a new deal.
Thus, with Washington, who is scheduled to earn $535,000 in the final year of his contract in 2009, being only a restricted free agent next season, he could command a maximum salary of roughly $3 million per season.
Under a new agreement, Washington's market value as an unrestricted free agent would be approximately $5 to $7 million per season.
An interesting situation, but nothing that prevents the Jets from just giving Leon some money. This has gone on for too damn long.
Here's a wonderful solution: Slightly overpay him now, before a new CBA is agreed on. Spend a little extra and cut your losses. I promise it will be made up by Leon Washington's multifaceted game.
--Also, Hutchinson writes this:
Former Rutgers DE Jamaal Westerman isn't only learning the outside LB position, he's now being taught the inside LB position as well. "Obviously, we think a great deal of this guy," said Ryan.
This Jamaal Westerman is already a favorite of the Jets staff, and is well on his way to becoming a fave of this blog. Why did NY draft Vernon "The Ghost" Gholston again...?
