NHL TRADE DEADLINE 2009

Hey all, Sean Croft here from NYI FYI. Just like last year, I'm going to post any rumors and/or confirmed deals. I will also mention players that are claimed off of waivers.

Here's how my Final Verdict Ratings go:

Power Play Goal
- Outstanding deal that makes sense for both teams
Goal- Not a huge deal, but makes sense for both teams.
Penalty- The deal was poor for one team.
Short Handed Goal- The deal was a steal for one team.

As I sit here in my pajamas, with a cup of coffee, a snuggie, TSN on one lap top while I'm blogging on another, all while watching the NHL Network, I begin to wonder if I should send me resume to Ecklund (whom I will NOT be following today.)

1:58 PM- DONE DEAL- Bill Guerin has been dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional pick.

Croft's Call- Wow. I'm pretty hard on the Isles at times, but this is terrible. And the team is to blame. They did not handle this the right way at all. They pull Guerin off the ice before Saturday's game, and say that the deal will be done by Sunday. It wasn't and they kept Guerin from playing. They had to take any deal thrown at them because Garth Snow burned a bridge with Guerin. He is definitely worth more than a conditional 5th rounder.

Final Verdict
- Short Handed Goal For Pittsburgh, and Penalty for the Isles.

1:52 PM- The news comes out that Peter Forsberg will be announcing his retirement tonight.

1:25 - DONE DEAL- The Bruins have acquired Mark Recchi and a 2010 2nd rounder from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Matt Lashoff and Martins Karcums.

1:11 PM - Chris Botta reports that Guerin is on the move any hour now. Many sources say its going to the Pittsburgh. Is this saga ever going to end?

1:07 PM - RUMOR- TSN reports that the Canucks and the Flyers are leading the way in the Bouwmeester sweepstakes.

12:58 PM - RUMOR- Andy Strickland of Hockeybuzz reports that the Isles have a looming trade, which will soon move veteran Bill Guerin. He's prety dependable. Lets keep our eyes open.

12:39 PM - DONE DEAL - Calgary Acquires Olli Jokinen from the Coyotes in exchange for a first rounder, F Brandon Prust and Matt Lombardi.

Croft's Call- Although this deal is good for both sides, it benefits Calgary more because now they are a legitimate threat in the West.

Final Verdict- Power Play Goal!

12:33 PM - DONE DEAL- TSN reports that the Boston Bruins have made a deal involving Petteri Nokelainen in exchange for D Steve Montador.

Croft's Call- Nokie is a fine young player and Montador adds more depth to the Bruins bench.

Final Verdict- Goal!

12:33 PM - Tim Stapleton has been pulled off the ice at Maple Laafs Practice.

12:24 PM - UPDATE- the Proposed move for Olli Jokinen to the Flames would involve C Matt Lombardi and a 1st round pick going back to Phoenix according to ESPN.

12:04 PM - DONE DEAL - C Brendan Morrisson claimed by the Dallas Stars.

Croft's Call- Dallas needs help right now. A good veteran center will help make plays. What they need more than Morrisson is to get their injured players back. Dallas isn't going far this year, but this was a good call.

Final Verdict- Goal!

12:04 PM - DONE DEAL- G Martin Gerber has been claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Croft's Call- Good move for Toronto. Vesa Toskala is hurt and continues to hurt. Shut him down and go with Gerber. This is a guy who knows how to win. I like what Brian Burke has done here. He isn't going to carry you to the playoffs, and he isn't at the top of his game, but this was the best move so far for Toronto, and the goaltending is better by leaps and bounds. Gerber has alot to prove, so watch for alot of intensity with his play.

Final Verdict- Power Play Goal!

12:03 PM - DONE DEAL- The Coyotes send back up goalie Mikael Tellqvist to the Sabres for a 4th rounder.

Croft's Call: Another nice move by the Sabres. They needed a back up and they got one. They didn't give up much to get him.

Final Verdict- Goal!

11:49 AM - DONE DEAL- The Penguins acquire Andy Wozniewski from the St Louis Blues in exchange for Danny Richmond.

Croft's Call- Danny Richmond has proved very little, but hasn't had much of an opportunity either. The young defenseman has 3 assists in only 49 NHL games. Wozniewski is a bit older, and has proved less in 28 more games than Richmond. This is a minor league deal basically. Not a factor for either club on a major level. Fair on both sides.

Final Verdict- Goal!

11:39AM - DONE DEAL- Jordan Leopold to the Calgary Flames from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Lawrence Nycholat, Ryan Wilson, and Montreal's 2nd round pick.

Croft's Call- This is a fair trade for both sides. Leopold goes back to Calgary and brings maybe 10 goals a year with him. He's a nice addition to a Calgary team who is looking to improve today. Although he clearly isn't the best player out there, he has played for the Flames before, and they are addressing their needs. He is a decent puck moving defenseman who will find himself on the 3rd or 4th line. Nycholat has only played in 45 NHL games in a 9 year career. He has 2 career goals, and Calgary only claimed him off of waivers yesterday. He isn't going to be a factor for a fading Colorado.

Final Verdict- Goal!

11:26 AM- RUMORED- Olli Jokinen To the Calgary Flames from the Phoenix Coyotes. This rumor comes from TSN, more to come.

11:01 AM- RUMORED- The Tampa Bay Lightning are shopping Veteran Forward Mark Recchi, in the hopes of nabbing a 2nd Round Pick.

10:41 AM- CONFIRMED- The Fourth Period and TSN are reporting that the Buffalo Sabres and Forward Tim Connolly have agreed to a multi0year contract extension.

Croft's Call-This is a bad deal for the Buffalo Sabres. I'm fine with a 2 year deal, and I think it's great that they are retaining a leader who has been with the team for quite some time, but not for $4.5 million per season. However, this is a player who is constantly injured. He broke into the league with the Islanders in 1999, and since then, has only played 2 full seasons:

Games G A Pts Plus/Minus Pim
2001-02 Buffalo 82 10 35 45 +4 34
2000-01 NY Islanders 82 10 31 41 -14 42

This year, he only has 11 goals and 15 assists. Its bad deals like this that drive up the cost of contracts.

Final Verdict- Penalty!

10:33 AM- Talks have fallen through between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Forwards Dominic Moore and Nic Antropov. GM Brian Burke confirms that both of these players will be moved. Toronto is hoping to build up on draft picks. More to follow.

9:56 AM- DONE DEAL- The Columbus Blue Jackets acquire F Antoine Vermette from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for G Pascal LeClaire and a 2nd Round Pick.

Croft's Call: This is a great deal for each team. The Senators are in desperate need of a goalie, and with the play of rookie Steve Mason this season, LeClaire was disposable for the Jackets. Ottawa can also build with a little youth, grabbing a 2nd round pick. I like this deal all around.

Final Verdict: Power Play Goal!
