Mike T here with my thoughts on the NCAA Tournament, with 3 games starting at/around 12 noon to kick off the Tourney. The biggest storyline: Memphis had to go on a 20-6 run in the final four minutes to beat 15th seeded Cal- St Northridge 71-60 in the West region.
The Tigers came out and watched stars Tyreke Evans and Robert Dozier barely play in the first half because of foul trouble. Add in the great play of Northridge, which had 5 players in double figures, and you were sweating if you were John Calipari. However, one man came and saved the day (and alot of brackets): Roburt Sallie.
Sallie, a 6-5 sophomore, dropped 35 points on the Matadors, almost tripling his previous career high of 13. Sallie shot 10/15 from downtown and gave you the type of performance that helps you get through the tournament.
Thoughts on the other games:
- (8) LSU held off (9) Butler 75-71 to move on in the East Region. Not to be outdone by Sallie, LSU guard Marcus Thornton scored 30 points to help the Tigers advance. They will play either North Carolina or Radford on Saturday. Matt Howard led Butler with 22 points.
- (9) Texas A&M had no problems with (8) BYU, winning 79-66 to advance to the 2nd round of the West region. Bryan Davis led the Aggies with 21 points, and Donald Sloan added 14 for A&M. This game was a rematch of last year's opening round game, when the 9th seeded Aggies again beat the 8th seeded Cougars 67-62.
Matt Soldano will take over for the 2:00 games (including UConn and UNC beginning their runs), and I will be back to update you after the first portion of the night session. Matt will then take over for the 9:00 games (and also update you on the standings of our WCWP NCAA Tourney pool). So check back here all day for our thoughts on the Tourney.
