It's Not Unusual

Thomas Jones did not show up to the first day of Jets offseason conditioning.

According to the NY Daily News, Jones is "believed" to want a new contract. It isn't surprising if he does. Jones led the AFC in rushing last season and has only two years left on his deal, with just a $900K salary in '09. Jones turns 31 in August, though, and the Jets are more likely to extend Leon Washington. They could also draft Jones' eventual replacement in April.

From Rotoworld

Hinting at a new contract is definately not the most asinine thing Thomas Jones could do after the year he had in 2008. He carried the ball 290 times for 1,312 yards (4.5 yds/carry) and 13 touchdowns, and added 2 receiving touchdowns to become the holder of the Jets' single-season touchdown record.

Jones is coming off of his best season, however, he is 30 years old, going on 31. I know he doesn't have a great deal of wear on him, despite his age, but I would never give a player at his age more than a 2-year deal -- maybe 3.

I would suggest that New York Jets management solves the problem by giving Thomas Jones more money and incentives, but not more years. If that can't be reached, the team will be in a sticky situation, similar to the Pete Kendall catastrophe. The situation becomes a decision between the lesser of two evils: letting Jones go, thus making the team exponentially worse, or giving him a new deal; possibly taking on the task of employing a deteriorating player and opening the door for more players to request new contracts.

I'll keep my eye on this one.

To make this year's NCAA Tournament more interesting, Jordan Lauterbach and I have made a little wager. If a 16 seed upsets a number 1, Jordan will owe me a candy bar. If that fails to occur, I will owe Jordan some candy. He has already named his candy of choice; selecting the noble Twix® bar.

Let's go Morehead State!

The Knicks' loss against the Nets was the most disgusting thing I've seen since Morehead St. vs. Alabama St. I actually turned it off and I never turn a Knicks game off.

More on this tomorrow on The Sportswire.
