According to the Orange and Brown Report (Scout.com), the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns have held potential trade discussions about wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
Giants' sources allegedly informed the OBR that the two teams had tossed around a few potential deals (New York initiated contact) including a trade of their extra picks acquired from New Orleans in the deal for Jeremy Shockey (second and fifth).
Cleveland apparently countered with a deal asking for those picks plus wide receiver Steve Smith, which Big Blue abruptly turned down. However, they did inform the Browns they'd do the deal if Domenick Hixon or Mario Manningham were accepted in Smith's place.
Since then, talks have faded away but may resurface as the NFL Draft nears.
Note: Despite other rumors, defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka was never mentioned in talks between Cleveland and New York.
I wouldn't have given up Steve Smith, but Hixon and Manningham are interesting. While people are unsure about Manningham, Hixon showed a great deal of promise last season. It's strange that the Giants would try to trade him after such an outstanding season. But, to get Edwards, it may be worth it.
