Hey everybody- Mike T here with the Big East Digest ( I think this is the winner we will go with). The Big East regular season ends on Sunday with 2 huge matchups ( Marquette- Syracuse and Pitt- UConn), however this week showcases a very good matchup before Sunday. Lets take a look at it right now:
Wednesday- #15 Marquette (23-6, 12-4) at #4 Pitt (26-3, 13-3) 7:30PM.
- This game is intriguing because the two teams have such different styles. Pitt wants to slow down the game and rough you up, while Marquette plays small at times and wants to get up and down. Marquette has lost two games to UConn and Louisville since losing Senior Point Guard Dominic James to a broken foot. Pitt has stayed relatively healthy all year, even though DeJuan Blair limped out of the game against Seton Hall.
- The Battle of the BMOCs: Sam Young and Jerel McNeil.
Both players have other players that can step up (Blair and Levance Fields for Young, Wesley Matthews for McNeil) but in the end the game will come down to who can make a bigger impact. Young has dominated at times this season, and McNeil for awhile was the front runner (in my eyes) for Big East Player of The Year. McNeil struggled against Louisville, but I think that was an aborration more than the theory that McNeil will struggle without James.
The Pick: Pitt is extremely tough at home, and Marqutte has stuggled in their last two games stopping active big men. I think Blair has a typical Blair game, but I also think Pitt will have lots of trouble with McNeil and Matthews, not to mention Lazar Hayward downlow. I think Marquette wins a close one.
I'll see everyone on Saturday when I'll preview Sunday's games. Then on Sunday I will post a preview of teh Big East Tourney, which gets udnerway Tuesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
