Big East Digest- Day 1 finished

Hello again, Mike T here with the Big East digest. The first round is finished and the 2nd round will get underway Wednesday afternoon. Before I get to the round 2 predictions, here are some thoughts from round 1:

- I went 3-1 in the first round, pumping my record to 7-1 when it matters most. The only loss? DePaul's only conference win. Dar Tucker and Will Walker both had 17 points and the Blue Demons went on a 15-2 run to take control against Cincinnati. Congrats to Jerry Wainwright and his kids.

- Paris Horne was huge again as St Johns beat Georgetown for the 2nd time in a week. 23 points is not bad for the Sophomore, and St Johns has a nice chip to build on for the future. Horne, DJ Kennedy and incoming frshmen Dwight Hardy and Omari Lawrence could be a nice foundation for the Johnnies.

- Jeremy Hazell and Eugene Harvey combined for 39 points to lead Seton Hall to a victory over South Florida. The Hall are a team that is flying under the radar a bit for next year, and this victory helped knock that shadow off.

Now onto the 2nd round picks:

Noon- (16) DePaul vs. (8) Providence
- Nice break for Providence not having to take on Cincinnati in this game. Providence shouldnt have any problem with DePaul, but then again I said the same thing with Cincy. The Friars will move on to face top seeded Louisville on Thursday afternoon.

2pm- (13) St Johns vs. (5) Marquette
- The Johnnies are coming off a solid victory over Georgetown. Marquette has lost 4 in a row without guard Dominic James. The Johnnies couldnt possibly gather some Garden magic and pull an upset could they? This game will be close and hard fought, but Marquette has Jerel McNeil, who is the best player on the court. The Golden Eagles will move on to face 4th seeded Villanova on Thursday afternoon.

7pm- (10) Notre Dame vs. (7) West Virginia
- The Fighting Irish are fighting for their postseason lives, and not just the NCAA tourney. A loss here and they arent even guaranteed an NIT bid. Not exactly how Mike Brey and company envisioned their season going. West Virginia, according to me, is firmly in the tournament field, and a win will cement that. I like DaSean Butler to have a huge game. The Mountaineers move onto a date with 2nd seeded Pitt on Thursday night.

9pm- (11) Seton Hall vs. (6) Syracuse
- I love the Orange here. They are playing real well, and that win on the road in Marquette to close the regular season is a game that can jump start a magical run for a team. The Pirates will keep it close for a bit, but they dont have the fire power to stay with the Cuse. Jonny Flynn, who said he is leaning towards coming back for his Junior year, and company will move on to face 3rd seed UConn on Thursday night.

So there you have it. Four more games, all 4 on ESPN (which will make my day alot of fun), and of course I will be back on Wednesday night to give my thoughts on the day's events. Until then, enjoy it.

record: 7-1
